Although there are too many toxic ingredients used in cosmetics these days to list them all in a single blog post, there are a few common ones to look for:

  • Petroleum and other petrochemicals, including mineral oil and paraffin. These are often found in mascara and hairsprays.
  • Parabens – this type of preservative (found in all types of products!) has shown the ability to mimic estrogen and traces have been found in breast tumor tissue.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – This surfactant is found in many shampoos and the sole purpose of its presence is to strip your hair of natural oils. Unfortunately, this process also removes natural protective qualities that your hair and scalp have, leaving you more susceptible to chemical absorption from the shampoo itself as well as any other products you use.

The Environmental Working Group created the cosmetics database, Skin Deep, which serves as a comprehensive resource covering all of the safe (or not!) chemicals and ingredients found in personal care products.

It can take a little getting used to, but reading up on ingredients and finding brands and products that you fully trust is worth it—it’s a matter of your health.
